Cristhian Mosquera – Player Scouting Report

A scouting report on Mosquera’s profile and how he’s solidified himself as one of the best CB prospects in Europe. We also look at how Arsenal can use his services and what the long term vision can be.

Career Overview

From Valencia’s academy to Spain’s U21, Mosquera’s rise has been steady and commanding. Joining Valencia at just 12, his talent demanded attention. At 17, he became the youngest centre-back to debut for the club, a moment that spoke of grit far beyond his years.

Since 2023, he’s grown into a constant figure into Valencia’s backline. Earlier this month, he donned the Spanish colours at the U21 EURO – standing tall as a pillar of reliability. The latest step in a journey that began early, leveraging him in the conversations of the elite CB prospects.

Cristhian Mosquera is a fearless, front footed defender who likes to neutralise his game around his defensive acumen. Strong in tackles/interceptions, composed on the ball, physically competitive and showcasing top speed + awareness from the last line.

Mosquera provides the versatility to fit in CB -LCB/RCB and RB in the backline. A right footed player, who can use his left. Brings in the tactical flexibility to be utilised as a ball playing CB, stopper, sweeper/libero or even as a WCB. Played 97% mins for club this season

Firstly, let’s look at his player profile:

Playstyle – Out of Possession

Albeit tackling players especially lunging into tackles and aggressively marking them out can be seen as a caution, his timing of tackles and anticipating play is apologetic. The technique in cross body movements allow him to stretch his legs at the dribbler, very rarely giving away fouls

This trait massively helps him defuse transitions. He’s used to covering larger spaces at Valencia as a stopper, he uses it to blocking passes in the centre whilst covering the intricate spaces left in the defensive third by his partners. Reads the game well, allowing to maximise lose balls and counter attack

A no nonsense approach in box defending where he’s very alert and expressive with his actions. Doesn’t dilly dally on the ball when it’s not required. As a WCB, he’s very good at dueling and pushing wingers into uncomfortable positions. Physically matching them in isolation

He’s got a good physique (upper body strength) that compliments his defensive technique in intercepting play and making himself look big. His tall frame and long legs help him reach to passes between the lines and also recover the ball from attackers who like to shield the ball
Average 5.15 recoveries per90

He’s played majorly in sides which have a high line, are bound to hit by counter attacks or come up directly against the strongest and quickest attackers. Here’s where comes in his blistering recovery pace and ability to sprint even from uncanny situations.

He screens and scans the game very maturely, something that distinguishes young defenders from conversations of being the best. As a sweeper, he’s capable of assessing and calling the keeper to step out and intervene, a common theme during the U21 EURO.

The sweeping ability is one of his finest traits. He’s aware and capable of covering for his teammates – as aggressive his nature is, he can curb it and protect the last line. Provides the safety to a defence, tackles a high % of dribblers (77.5) per90 and brings cover a prone side to pressing

Aggression is what Mosquera is synonymous with in people’s overview. To me, the aggression is tamed, however, it’s the way he moves rather than the actions that make you feel that. The approach to duels, the close man marking, the closing down of spaces all has an effect of winning back the ball quick.

The broader intelligence/IQ is shown the most when he’s the last defender in the backline, observing and reacting with his physical stature to outmuscle the opponent whilst reading his body language. Can organise a defensive line and isn’t fazed with pressure.

Playstyle – In Possession

Mosquera is a proactive defender, not only on the defensive side on things but more so on the ball – showcasing his exceptional ball playing abilities. Composed and direct with his approach, the Spaniard is usually safer with his passing style

The weight of pass, flight in delivery to its receiver and the dip on the ball has a poetic effect to it – he’s also pretty good at distributing with either feet due to his experience at LCB/RCB and the angles it brings. Vertical line breakers in particular to the opposite flank is his go to

Watching him more so at LCB – he’s more prone to find lofted progressive passes from there than he is at RCB. From the left he prefers to play short passes to the centre or lofted through passes for the runner (CF/LW). RCB role and the passing has variances in what looks like lofted passes to the opposite flank.

He’s someone who likes to keep things tidy in possession, someone who releases it quick without any angle bias in receiving and distributing. He’s also someone when given the responsibility would like to carry and distribute play, increasing the tempo and risks in passes

Areas for Improvement:

Aerially is where Mosquera statistically struggles to influence play. With a 45.2% aerial duel win rate last season, at a meagre 1.14 aerial duels won per90. It’s a major area to assess for a tall defender like him

If you’ve watched enough of Mosquera, you’d notice he tends to make mistakes – often cause because of weak decision making in tight spaces or a bad first touch. Either larger touches while carrying or losing control of the ball – coachable of course

Zone of Interest + Comparisons:

On a long term basis, Mosquera has the capabilities to become a natural sweeper, someone who plays the libero role like Saliba currently does at Arsenal, to an extent. He’s also got capabilities to be the stopper, predominantly scanning and covering for teammates

Mosquera’s frame, agility and high line control makes me believe he’s similar to Jules Kounde. He’s got Marc Guehi type positional IQ and physical build. Ronald Araujo type hybrid versatility and aggression. With potential room for growth like William Saliba – a brilliant talent pool of capabilities

Fit at Arsenal

The Gunners have been in need of a RCB cover for Saliba, and a predominant right footed defender in their Arsenal. With Kiwior, Calafiori, Gabriel all primarily being left footers, Mosquera’s interest value explodes. With Saliba clocking close to 4500’ minutes last season, depth is a need.

Mosquera who has featured 97% of Valencia’s matches last season, across the backline boasts a good injury record. Additionally, he’s a defender who’s versatile, front footed, composed and direct – all that suits Arteta’s ideal needs and a replacement to an injured Tomiyasu

A reinforcement in defence that solidifies its already established core, now raising the ceiling with a player wanting to contribute and compete with one of the best defences in Europe. Available to provide cover at CB- LCB/RCB/WCB in possession + an emergency RB shift.
