Key Learnings From Arsenal’s Pre-Season Fixtures

Arsenal spent the latter half of July and the initial period of August playing friendlies across Singapore, Hong Kong, and North London, in what is widely known as preparations prior to the crucial campaign that begins on the eve of 15th August.

The Gunners played a total of five games — three wins against AC Milan, Newcastle, and Athletic Bilbao, and two losses to Tottenham Hotspur and Villarreal at the Emirates. Here are some of the most interesting insights from Arsenal’s perspective.

Who would’ve thought Viktor Gyökeres would open his Arsenal account with a header? Certainly not me. For a player who’s faced criticism over his aerial ability at Sporting CP, the Swede silenced doubters with a glorious first-half finish and came close with another diving header.

With two starts under his belt, Gyökeres is quickly finding his feet in Arsenal’s system — adapting to the tempo, timing his runs, and understanding his teammates’ strengths and weaknesses.

His variety of attributes was on show: tireless channel running, physical presence, hold-up and link-up play, and intelligent movement to open spaces for others. In just 130–140 minutes in red and white, he’s shown exactly why Arsenal pushed for his signature and why he sought this step up. The competition with Kai Havertz, who started the final pre-season game on the bench, will only benefit the team.

Martin Zubimendi Brings Midfield Composure and Control

If Arsenal fans are already calling Martin Zubimendi the signing of the season — it’s understandable. The Spaniard’s class on and off the ball has been a joy to watch.

Across the five games, Zubimendi barely put a foot wrong, offering:
– Tempo control as a deep-lying playmaker
– Constant interceptions, recoveries, and tackles
– Central and vertical progression
– Press resistance through bait-and-delay tactics before carrying forward
– Tight-space manipulation

In the final pre-season clash against Athletic Bilbao, Mikel Arteta finally deployed Zubimendi, Rice, and Ødegaard together. The Rice–Zubimendi pivot offered seamless rotations between staying deep and advancing, while Ødegaard operated in zone 14 with added freedom.

Noni Madueke Provides a New Dimension from LW

Brought in primarily as Saka’s cover on the right, Noni Madueke looks set to see most of his minutes on the left wing. His direct approach — purposeful carries, sharp dribbles, and incisive passes — has been an asset, especially against deep or compact blocks.

Coming on at half-time against Athletic Bilbao, Madueke impressed with his driving runs, varied deliveries (clipped crosses and cutbacks), and relentless intent. Defensively, he tracked back diligently, blocked passing lanes, and pressed with aggression.

Max Dowman – Hale End’s Latest Gem

At just 15 years old, Max Dowman has been a standout every time he’s stepped onto the pitch this pre-season. Operating mostly on the right wing, his fearless dribbling and direct style made him a constant outlet for teammates.

The trust shown by senior players — seeking him out repeatedly — says everything about his impact. Now eligible for senior football, it will be intriguing to see if Arteta keeps him in the first-team picture.

Arsenal’s Tactical Shift for the New Season

Fans have been eager to see tactical tweaks to help break down stubborn low blocks. Arteta has responded with signings who can move the ball forward quickly, excel in tight spaces, and take shots more readily — Gyökeres, Zubimendi, and Madueke all fitting that brief.

Arsenal are blending verticality and directness with short, intricate passing patterns. Raya is encouraged not only to go long but also to bait opposition presses before playing quick combinations through triangles and diamonds. This variety could be key to converting dominance into silverware.
