La Masia has long been a breeding ground for footballing superstars. Graduates like Lionel Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Thiago and Alba have all enjoyed stellar careers after breaking through the academy.
One of the more recent names to emerge outside of the highly touted Lamine Yamal—is Alejandro Balde. The Spanish left-back is a dynamic presence, thriving on his technical ability and attacking instincts.
Barcelona’s title charge this season has been fueled by a collective team effort, and Balde has played his part from the back. Against Osasuna on Friday night, he created multiple chances and provided a stunning assist — his 8th of the season across all competitions.
Dissecting Alejandro Balde’s Playstyle:
Balde embodies a modern full-back—technically refined, attack-minded and blessed with an exceptional ability to carry the ball at speed. His long strides allow him to glide past opponents, while his explosiveness in both short and long distances makes him a threat in 1v1 situations as a dribbler. Fun fact, Balde started his career as winger at La Masia!
His offensive contributions shine in Barcelona’s high octane playstyle. He frequently delivers sharp, low-driven crosses from the edge of the box and combines well in tight spaces to create overloads. His ability to stretch defenses provides width, complementing both underlapping and overlapping runs.
Despite his attacking mindset, Balde is defensively solid. His speed allows him to recover quickly in transitions, while his agile hips and sharp reactions give him an advantage in 1v1 duels. He also possesses the tenacity to press aggressively, often winning back possession high up the pitch.
Can He Enter Conversations for the Best Left-Backs?
If you’re looking for one of Europe’s most promising young left-backs, Balde is undoubtedly in the conversation. But who does he compare to?
The first name that comes to mind is Alphonso Davies, as both share an explosive style. However, Balde appears slightly more disciplined defensively, whereas Davies is more versatile and clinical in the final third.
From a technical standpoint, Nuno Mendes has reached another level this season, but I’d categorise him in a similar wavelength as Balde. Mendes is stronger in defensive duels, but Balde plays with more composure. Their battle for stardom in the coming years will be exciting – Balde likely looking to refine his game further in the mold of the Portuguese star.
