A 6-0 victory vs Augsburg puts the German club on the pedestal in the Bundesliga, trailing Bayern Munich by 5 points at second position. With 6 different scorers on the scoresheet, Leipzig’s side which went through a summer haul look to be finding their feet.
Key performances from Romulo Cruz, Assan Ouédraogo, Yan Diomande and ever so reliable Christoph Baumgartner saw them get their second highest Bundesliga win in their history.
It was in the opening week that they were smashed by 6 goals vs the Bavarians, questions arising on how the season would pan for them with no European football and one game a week.
Fast forward to GW8, the fresh look of talents signed across Europe they’ve built a strong synergy and momentum that is reflecting with the football they play and overall standings.
Key Performers Over the Season
Romulo Cruz | 23 | Brazil
Signed from the Turkish top division, Cruz has proved to be a top signing from a Non T5 league. Adding to his tally of goal contributions, he’s now at the top for his club with 6G/A. A technically gifted CF who looks ahead of his age.
The actions between the pockets of spaces whilst dropping deep attract the midfield and defence l off their markers, eventually creating space and layoffs for others due to his smart positioning.
The quick feet and one touch passes with the flicks work well. He’s also someone who can run the channels with good box presence and understanding the fundamentals of a strikers play, perfectly working for him to thrive in new surroundings.
Yan Diomande | 18 | Ivory Coast
In only 45 minutes of football against Augsburg, the Ivorian opened his account with the German club with 1 goal and 2 assists. Signed in the summer from Leganés in the summer, the winger is finally finding his feet in Germany.
Diomande is a two footed dribbler; instinctual with the 1v1s; smart in deceiving opponents with his body orientation and showboats his way into getting you off your seat. The verticality he brings from wider areas helps them have an option at bay apart from Johan Bakayoko.
Assan Ouédraogo | 19 | Germany
Technically not a new summer signing, but he almost spent the entirety of last season being injured. A goal and assist this weekend is a testament to how he’s put his injuries behind and put his performance ahead of the setbacks.
A tall lanky midfielder who brings in the stability into the midfield. A box to box midfield profile who likes to drive with the ball at his feet, very good in carrying and dribbling. He likes getting higher up the pitch, reflecting in the 5.49 touches in the opposition box and 4 G/A assists this season.
Antonio Nusa | Norway | 20
RB Leipzig’s key man in attack has the potential to be their next big money sale; just the biggest compliment you can provide for a consistent young talent. As a winger, he can go both ways and influence games out of nowhere.
The best trait he has on his platter is certainly his crosses, especially the ones that swing inwards for runners in the box. The minimal backlift he gets in those situations, weight of pass and consistency in dangerous delivery make him the best at it.
He’s very tricky to defend against, someone who’d keep defenders on the backfoot because of his low centre of gravity, balance and consistent use of body feints and skills. Slow to begin the season, but with regular minutes he’s getting in the groove
